About David J. O’Connell

David J. O’Connell is Professor Emeritus of French in Georgia State University’s Department of Modern & Classical Languages.  Dr. O’Connell taught in the department from 1988 to 2010.   Dr. O’Connell had a long and distinguished academic career. 

He began his academic career at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he served as an Assistant Professor of French from 1968-1973 and as an Associate Professor of French from 1973-1977.  Dr. O’Connell then became a full Professor of French at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he served from 1977-1988.  His tenure at the University of Illinois, Chicago, also included five years as the Head of the French Department from 1977-1982. 

Dr. O’Connell then moved to Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia to serve as the Chairperson of the Department Modern and Classical Languages from 1988-1993.  He continued to serve on the faculty of Georgia State University until his retirement in 2010.
